Visual Design

The craft of composition, colour, typography and imagery — how an interface or asset looks, and what that appearance communicates.

Design Disciplines

Visual design governs hierarchy, rhythm, contrast, balance and consistency. In an interface it makes the important thing obviously important and the secondary thing quietly available; in brand work it is how a company signals what kind of company it is before a word is read. It is judged on whether it communicates, not on whether it is attractive in isolation.

Applied to product it overlaps heavily with UI design; applied to a company it belongs to brand identity. Either way it is constrained work: contrast has an accessibility floor, type has a legibility floor, and a composition that reads beautifully at desk width has to survive a 375px screen.

In practice

A meme coin site was designed with a display typeface at 14px for body copy. Before: mobile users could not read the tokenomics section and it was the most-exited part of the page. After keeping the display face for headings only and setting body copy in a legible face at 16px, time on that section tripled. The catch — the founder preferred the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is visual design different from UI design?

Visual design is the underlying craft — composition, colour, type, imagery — and applies to any medium. UI design is that craft applied to interactive interfaces, with the added burden of states, input and accessibility.

What contrast ratio should text meet?

At least 4.5:1 against its background for body text, and 3:1 for large text and meaningful non-text elements. These are minimums, and light grey placeholder text is the most common violation.
